1. Anemoia: A Multi-Modal AI Scent Generation System

"To perceive is to remember, and to remember is to imagine anew."
Anemoia is a groundbreaking device that evokes nostalgia for times and places you’ve never experienced, transcending personal memory to explore a shared, hybrid sense of history and identity. Coined by John Koenig, anemoia describes the longing for a past you’ve never known—a concept that resonates deeply in the era of AI-generated content, where imagined realities and reconstructed narratives blend seamlessly with lived experience.
At the heart of Anemoia lies the idea of TeleAbsence: the ability to connect with memories beyond oneself, bridging human and non-human experiences through tangible interactions. The device generates autobiographical sensory memories using image captioning, user-defined prompts, and olfactory output, offering a deeply intimate yet entirely novel sensory connection. Drawing on the Proust Effect, where scent uniquely triggers vivid recollections, Anemoia enables users to not only imagine but physically feel memories of alternate realities, forgotten times, or imagined lives.
The Anemoia device combines digital augmentation with tangible interfaces to deliver an interactive memory-generation process. Divided into three sections—image processing, mechanical control, and fragrance output—it creates a seamless flow from input to sensory experience:
- Image Processing: A mounted camera captures photos placed on a platform, which are analyzed using Claude API. The system captions the image, extracts subjects, and categorizes them by relative time periods.
- Mechanical Processing: Users interact with three intuitive dials to choose a subject, define a time period, and evoke a specific emotion or tone. This tangible interface allows users to sculpt imagined memories with precision.
- Fragrance Output: Using a system of pumps and perfume ingredients, the device transforms generated memory prompts into a scent formula. The fragrance, tied to the generated memory, provides an olfactory bridge to the imagined past, creating a deeply immersive and sensory experience.
Inspired by distillation and perfume-making, Anemoia merges design and function to create a hybrid of memory, tangibility, and augmentation. The device not only reimagines the boundaries of memory but also de-centers the human perspective, generating memories from the vantage points of other living or non-living beings. By creating this hybrid memory generator, Anemoia invites users to explore nostalgia not as a personal phenomenon but as a shared, imaginative experience, reconnecting them with the unseen and unremembered.
Anemoia transforms the abstract into the tangible, bridging the digital and physical worlds through interaction. Its dials, weight systems, and olfactory output create an embodied experience that invites users to engage deeply with generated memories. By combining AI-driven storytelling with tangible design, Anemoia offers a profound exploration of memory as both an emotional and multisensory construct.
